Hip-Hip Poetics

In this 6 week class, we will listen to and discuss a diverse range of rap artists. The goal is to understand hip-hop on an artistic level, analyzing the craft and delivery of the words to better inform our own poetry and how we read it.

This class is open to writers of all levels regardless of how much knowledge you have over hip-hop or poetry.

Must be 18 years or older to register.

Registration period: open until October 4th or until full

Class: runs from October 12 - November 16 (Zoom class every Saturday at 10am - 12pm ET)

Overview

  • We will start with a deep dive into the history of rap music. Then explore topics such as internal rhyme, cadence & flow, compression & swell, verbal percussion, and more!

    • This class will run for six weeks.

    • Each week we will meet for 2 hours to discuss the materials and have a studio session.

    • Each week there will be materials to read and listen to.

  • We will meet online on Zoom and all materials and on-line discussions will happen via Google Classroom.

  • I've always believed that Rap music is one of the most under appreciated art forms as it is widely left out of literary conversations. The socioeconomic stigma of Rap music is pervasive and I want writers to believe hip-hop to be one of the highest modes of artist expression. One which every writer--from beginner to critically acclaimed--can learn from and appreciate.

  • In this class, we will discuss rappers such as Biggie, Nipsey Hussle, Gangsta Boo, Nas, and many more! Alongside these artists, we will read poetry from Jenny Xie, Danez Smith, and Erica Dawson.

Do I have to know a lot about hip-hop before attending?

Not at all! This class will provide ways to incorporate hip-hop poetics into your work, as well as provide seminars on the history of hip-hop and how to analyze the lyrics.

I have taken the 3 hour version of this class before. Will there be any new content?

The class will use the same topics/similar materials as the 3 hour version, but there will be a deeper dive into the techniques, the craft, and the readings. Plus, unlike in the 3 hour version, there will be sections where you will turn in poems and receive feedback!

Whether you are new to hip-hop or new to poetry, or both, this class is for anyone who is curious and inquisitive. All levels are welcome!
