Young Writers Studio

The main focus of this 8 week studio is to build community. The seminars are short and the discussions are fruitful. Every writer benefits from being amongst other writers who will look at their work with attention and care.

This class is open to writers of all levels who are looking for life-long peers to converse and share their work with.

Must be attending high school to register.

Overview

  • We will be sharing our work, receiving feedback, and having in depth discussions about our craft and others' craft. The idea is learn to trust one another and inspire one another to become better writers and readers.

    • This class will run for eight weeks.

    • Each week we will meet for 2 hours to discuss and have a studio session.

    • Each week there will be poems to read and give feedback on.

  • We will meet online on Zoom and all materials and on-line discussions will happen via Google Classroom.

  • When young writers embark on their artistic paths, it is important to have a community of people when they are at their most creative, most ambitious, and most experimental.

The writing itself might happen largely in isolation, but the experience of living, interacting, and inspiring happens off the page.

  • In this class, we will primarily discuss each other's work, but we will also be supplementing the studio with the work of poets such as Allison Benis White, Ocean Vuong, Peter Gizzi, Victoria Chang, Maggie Nelson, and more!

FAQs

What if I have no experience in writing rooms?

That’s actually the point of the studio! This studio is for anyone looking for a community they can share with and anyone looking to expand their community.

I just graduated from high school. Can I still attend?

Unfortunately, you must be enrolled in high school in order to attend the studio. However, rising freshmen may register if they will be freshmen the same year the studio takes place. For example, if the studio is in Spring 2025 and you are starting high school in fall 2025, you may register for the studio.

Can I put this class on my resume?

Of course! You may list me as a mentor and reference. In addition, all students can request a letter of recommendation.

How often does the studio run?

The studio runs at least once a year. If enrollment is high, it will run multiple times a year. Please subscribe to the newsletter to be notified when registration opens.
